Āyurveda is the science or knowledge of life

āyuḥ (life) + veda (science or knowledge)

What is Āyurveda?

It is a complete system of healthcare & medicine that is likely the longest, continuously practiced system of medicine known today. Originating in and around India at least 5,000 years ago, Āyurveda holds several records including the oldest surviving text on surgery which is still in use today (the Suśhruta Saṁhitā, attributed to Suśhruta the founding father of surgery). Āyurveda is science that is adaptable, logical, and practical for any people, place, or time and is currently used in various forms by around 1 billion people today. In many countries it is practiced as a primary health care system and can be practiced in conjunction with other healthcare systems, modalities, and approaches. It is only in the last few centuries that its popularity has begun to increase in the West.

Āyurveda is a medical system with two primary goals:
1. To maintain the health of the healthy
2. To cure the disease of the sick

Professional Āyurveda Around the World

Not all Āyurveda in the West is the same. It is often misrepresented as “mind-body medicine”, “a diet and lifestyle approach”, “sister science of yoga”, “spa-like experience”, or “a vegetarian diet” among other misnomers. Even though it is a complex science that takes years of full time study, Āyurveda is often limited in its scope when practiced outside of India, not to mention appropriated and commercialized.

If you are using Āyurveda or considering it, choose who you work with carefully. Michelle studies and practices under the guidance of Dr. Jessica Vellela, BAMS. Michelle has completed training on par with standards and requirements in accredited Indian institutions and has earned the title Svastha Āchārya (SA) which can be translated as Āyurvedic Health Coach or Āyurvedic Practitioner.

Defining Health in All Aspects of Āyu

Āyurveda is the study of āyu, or all aspects of life, and how we interact with the world. Each of us has a personal responsibility to take care of our health. Only with health may we live our life to the fullest, perform our life’s work to the best of our ability, and enjoy the fruits of our labor. Through personal observation, awareness, and growth, Āyurveda can help you master your health, purpose, and goals by learning attune to your own personal needs and life cycles. Anyone can gain benefits from Āyurveda if they are ready to address the root cause(s) of dysfunction and work on targeted behavioral changes.

The purpose of Āyurveda is to maintain [literally, protect] the health of the healthy and to alleviate the disorders of the sick [literally, those who are suffering]. Cha. Sū. 30/26

That which is good or appropriate for an individual, that which is inappropriate for an individual, contentment or discontentment, and all that is appropriate or inappropriate for quality and duration of life can be measured and explained by Āyurveda, so it is told. Cha. Sū. 1/41
